The American Red Cross is not a government agency and all Red Cross disaster assistance is free thanks to the generosity of people like you. Ninety-two cents of every dollar donated to the American Red Cross is spent on programs and services that help people in need. What's more, the value of your donation is increased by the fact that the ratio of volunteer Red Cross workers to paid staff is almost 50 to one. The Brown County Chapter is also a partner in funding with the United Way.

If you would like more information about giving to the Brown County Chapter, contact the Chapter at 915/646-0196.

What: MotorDonor is the hassle-free vehicle donation program that benefits the Texas chapters of the American Red Cross. The program accepts all motor-oriented goods including automobiles, trucks, motor homes, boats, construction and farm equipment; etc. Non-motor related goods such as computers also are accepted.

Founded: MotorDonor was founded in November 1996 and officially began accepting donations in January 1997.

Why: Due to cutbacks in govemment-funded social programs, nonprofits are struggling to cope with an increased demand for their services. The financial gap these organizations are facing over the next six years is enormous. To fill this gap, nonprofits are turning to the private sector for innovative fundraising initiatives.

Services: Professionally operated flatbed towing service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week free of charge. Lost title search and all other related paper work is handled for donors free of charge. An operator is available during office hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and an answering service is available to take after-hours inquiries.

Benefits: Donors receive a donation receipt equal to the highest Kelley Blue Book retail value of the vehicle. Nonprofit organizations generate funds without taking donated dollars out of circulation.

In-Kind Contributions

In this day of corporate downsizing and consolidations, businesses are looking for ways to do more with less. This trend has impacted the way businesses contribute to charitable organizations. Instead of cash contributions, many companies today are finding that in-kind giving (donated goods or services) is easier on the bottom line, and often just as meaningful to the recipient as a cash contribution. And non-profit organizations like the Red Cross are finding that the expertise and resources common in the for-profit world can sometimes help in ways that money can’t.
